Our Barbareño (the name refers to people native to Santa Barbara) is a blend of 76% syrah and 24% petite sirah. Dark and spicy, seductive and complex, the wine is powerful yet shy. Layers of dark fruit and spice accompany chalky syrah tannin, coupled with the masculine structure of petite sirah. This wine rewards with time in bottle or a decanter when opened young. The palate is dense and bold with generous blue and black fruit, savory notes of seared meat and peppercorn, alongside sweet baking spices. Loam soils offer a rounder palate presence, all the while preserving good freshness.
This wine is a complex blend comprised of numerous blocks at the ranch, harvested and vinified in separate lots utilizing a combination of whole cluster fermentation, co-fermentation, and extended maceration. The wine matures on its lees, left undisturbed, for 20 months in 100% French oak barrels (35% new) of various sizes before the blends are put together and bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Soil Type: Linne Clay Loam - this whitish gray soil contains limestone pieces beginning 18”-24” below the surface. The presence of limestone captures and preserves the freshness in this wine, and being a heavier soil lends itself to a rounder mouthfeel.
